What is counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that refer to talking therapies that enable people to overcome or adapt to presenting difficulties in their life. What happens in our sessions?
Our initial consultation is a chance for us to meet and for you to talk through what led you to contact me and what you hope to get from the sessions. You will have the opportunity to gain a better idea of what to expect from our sessions and I will answer any questions you may have. I work to an "open contract" which means you decide how many sessions you wish to attend and for how long depending on how you feel and where you are at. During our sessions together, I will listen while you talk through your experiences and I shall try to understand things from your point of view. Together you will be encouraged to explore, and attempt to make sense of, the various issues that you are living with, and look at how you might be able to create change or live with them more effectively.
Will counselling/ psychotherapy help me?
Everyone responds differently to counselling /psychotherapy. It does not suit everyone but most people find it useful just to have an opportunity to talk things through with someone who is an independent person.
What risks are involved in counselling/ psychotherapy?
Counselling/ psychotherapy is like a journey; sometimes you come across unexpected issues along the way. Some people find the journey too rocky and turn back; others might try again at a later date. Everyone responds differently to the therapeutic process.
